Gethsemane

During the entire time spent on this painting, words from the song Gethsemane, by Melanie and Roger Hoffman, echoed through my mind. Especially the first line of the song. “Jesus climbed the hill to the garden still, his steps were heavy and slow.” The savior and his disciples often went to Gethsemane to ponder and pray. I have wondered if he knew that very place would be the sacred scene of the greatest sacrifice known to man. Did he actually know at that point everything he was about to bear? Did he know how hard it would be? Was he afraid?

It’s so hard to imagine that night and what he actually must have gone through. I don’t think we really will understand completely at this point in our existence, but I’m sure on that still, sacred night, we all knelt in reverent awe with tears in our eyes as we watched from heaven.

What we do know is that the very Son of God willingly made that climb to the still, peaceful garden that night to bear the sins and pains of all mankind. We know that his heart was heavy, that he longed for company but knew it had to be borne alone. We know that he felt the individual pains and sufferings that each of us would have to pass through. He felt what it was like to have each of our mortal weaknesses and shortcomings and what it would feel like to distance ourselves from the loving spirit of our heavenly father. These agonies and pains caused him to tremble and bleed from every pore and lay prostrate upon the ground. We know he called out to the Father but ultimately submitted to Gods will. He chose to do this because He LOVES us. Each of us. More than we can imagine.

Would standing on this holy ground make us believe more? Although these grounds surely possess a serene sacred stillness, the witness comes from the Holy Ghost. The promised comforter to the disciples.
When we have to climb hills and mountains, I hope we can remember Gethsemane. I hope we can remember the one who made that climb up the hill so that He could walk with us on our own climb.
